  Food for Thought: World Food Programme and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition Launch New Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network

  Business leaders from some of the world’s biggest companies gathered with leaders from government, the United Nations and civil society in London last night to announce a new approach to harnessing business support to the fight against maternal and child undernutrition. The event marked the launch of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Business Network. The SUN Movement is a new and unique global effort that unites people – governments, civil society, the United Nations, donors, businesses and researchers – in a collective effort to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms. The Business Network will enable businesses to align with the priorities of national governments as they increase their investments in nutrition.

  The network will facilitate business engagement in the SUN Movement, link business to other stakeholders and provide a public record of company commitments and activities to scale up nutrition interventions in the Movement’s 33 member countries. SUN Business Network members will act as ambassadors of nutrition by working to bridge the gap between the public and private sectors through the sharing of expertise.

  Media Coverage: India needs to strengthen ICDS to tackle malnutrition in children: GAIN

  I recently travelled to India as part of my work with GAIN. South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa remain the global epicentres for under nutrition. Below follows some of the points of discussion we raised as covered by The Times of India.

  Hyderabad: India needs to tackle the problem of malnutrition among children now, otherwise it might lead to more expenditure on healthcare later and a drop in GDP by 3%, top Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) officials said on Monday.
   “The targeting of schemes here like ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) needs to be better in order to reach children from rural areas and poverty-ridden families. There are lots of challenges with the scheme and it will definitely be a major point of discussion for us,” said Marc Van Ameringen, executive director at GAIN, which was created at a special session of the United Nations General Assembly on children in 2002.

  Improving Nutrition for Africa’s Food Security

  In June the world will turn its attention to the G20 Summit, where leaders from across the globe will gather to discuss some of the most pressing problems faced today. Food security, with an emphasis on food price volatility, will rightfully be high on the agenda.

  But implications for food security go well beyond the challenges of increasing food production to meet future demand, and of addressing short-term price volatility – for poor consumers , the issue is not just about the quantity of food that they eat, but also the quality. The nutritional quality of food consumed underlies health and wellbeing, and impacts on virtually all aspects of people’s lives and livelihoods. This is why when we consider food security in Africa, we must move beyond whether there is enough food but also consider whether that food can deliver life sustaining nutrients particularly for the millions of pregnant and lactating women and infants and young children who have greater nutritional requirements than the general population.

  The link between bad diets and undernutrition

  Science has proven the link between bad diets and undernutrition in the first 1000 days and obesity, cardio vascular, diabetes and bone disese later in life. Travelling through India one would have to be blind not to see the evidence of bad diets, lack of exercise and alcohol abuse is doing to generations of children. Bravo to the Minister and we should all stand up and support him against the powerful vested interests and lobby groups.

  Expect Fat & Salt Content Restrictions

  South Africans can expect the introduction of laws restricting fatty acids and salt content in food, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Saturday.

  The Essential Component of Social Justice is Adequate Food For All

  The Green Revolution remains one of the most successful drivers of economic development in the 20th century, enabling food production to keep pace with a doubling of global population from three billion in the 1960s to seven billion in 2011. Increases in staple food crop yields tripled during that period, reducing the percentage of malnourished people from 41 per cent in 1960 to 16 per cent in 2000 in Asia alone. Although the Green Revolution is credited with keeping food prices historically low, the global food system is failing today in two major ways: it is unsustainable and consumes resources faster than can be naturally replenished, and it contributes to extreme poverty, suffering and disease. ‘Adequate food for all’ must thus include the ability of the food system to nourish and fuel humanity equitably and sustainably. The future of humanity rests on being able to do more with less.
