SECTION27 goes to court to demand textbooks in Limpopo schools

I fully support this action. Citizens must not hesitate to use our courts including the highest court in the land, the Constitutional Court, to ensure that their constitutional rights to quality education is implemented.

18 years into my democracy it is an indictment on us that a court is asked to enforce a right that our children are educated properly. We need those responsible for such a negligence of duty to be held accountable. As citizens we want to know who was responsible. Who failed to do what we pay them to do and why they failed to do so?

We have a right to answers without excuses.

I fully support the legal action.

Our Education System is Failing Our Children

According to a recent survey, South Africa invest more money in public education than other emerging markets but continues to yield a lower adult literacy rate.

What more stats do we need? We all know the facts that our education system especially in our township and rural schools is failing our children. We need to strengthen the role of parents, communities and students in demanding the constitutional right to quality education. We must cease to accept mediocrity,negligence and dereliction of our responsibilities to our children. We need to mobilise around the demand that all public sector officials and politicians have their children in public schools and attend public hospitals.

The cracks are starting to show

For the past few weeks I, like most of humanity, have been glued to my TV set watching the extraordinary events unfold in North Africa and the Middle East. And I, too, can’t help but wonder how insulated we are in South Africa from a similar kind of revolution.

I don’t believe it will happen today or tomorrow, but I do believe it would be foolish on our part to think that we have set ourselves so solid a foundation that it could withstand similar ruptures ripping through our society.

Our Social Fabric in Tatters

Coming back from Beijing last week, on a plane filled with South African and Chinese business and government officials, 1 reflected on what it means to be a BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) nation – and some of the potential lessons for South Africa. In the few days I spent in China, I was witness to a country with functional systems, which has achieved substantial successes in addressing intractable challenges of development.

It was hard to ignore the outcomes of China’s modernisation path and the twin objectives of incentivising entrepreneurs and fixing education, driving industrial strategy and creating jobs.
