Kumi Naidoo on Military Expenditure

Kumi Naidoo rises legitimate issues around our insane expenditure on military expenditure when compared to our most pressing challenges around eradicating poverty and inequality, dealing with the devastating impact of climate change and the absolute need to provide quality health, education and basic services to every citizen of the world.

I would add that this imperative to build a better world for our children presumes a greater role for women in shaping the public and private institutions at a local, national and global level.

Climate change: Are current environmental organisations up for the challenge?

We are dangerously close to the precipice. The science on climate change is conclusive. With the current economic trajectory we will certainly not keep climate change under 2 degrees. Here is what the future for our children holds. Already we are seeing in Africa the devastating consequence of the prolonged droughts, increasing desertification, conflicts over water and grazing lands and the resultant famine and food insecurity. This requires urgent action from policy makers and our politicians. But sadly powerful corporate interests in the ‘dirty industries’ have a powerful hold on the political elites. It remains the role of grass roots social movements to mobilise the pressure to ensure the interests of our people and the future generations are put first.

Our future lies in the mothers of nature

The corporates are raping our natural resources. All they care about is profits. But one small Mexican community is showing us that change is possible. I went there to find out what they were doing right.

“Water is more precious than gold here in Cabo Pulmo” says Paulina Godoy Aguilar, a local activist. I understand why as we cut through the majestic mountain range. The landscape is scarred by aridity screaming out for forgiveness. The cactus plants, wizened by the scorching sun, are silhouetted shadows, custodians of this unrelenting terrain.

We need permanent solutions to our food security needs

Having visited Turkana in northern Kenya and seen the devastation of climate change first hand I can fully appreciate this viewpoint. I think our policy makers in Africa need to embrace indigenous knowledge more fully to find permanent solutions to our food security needs. I have great reservations about any solution that makes us hostage to vested interests in the seed, pesticide and fertilizer interests.

My Meeting with Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri

Dr Pachauri is a profound intellectual and activist who believes that research and its findings must improve the human condition and not just serve an academic purpose.

He is the Chairperson of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is rated as one of the topmost scientists and authorities on the impact of climate change. He received the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore for this work on highlighting the precarious situation our planet faces in relation to the ecological impact of our economic greed and consumption model.

Please, don’t squander this moment – An open letter to the governments of the world meeting in Durban.

Dear friends, welcome to our city. We remember a time in Durban – indeed, a period in the history of this nation of South Africa – when we feared that the apartheid state’s intransigence would spark a conflict in which much blood would be shed. But even at our lowest ebb, even when the injustice we faced seared through every minute of every day, our people stood firm in the knowledge that justice itself would defeat a system that put different values on different people based on nothing more arbitrary than the colour of their skin.

Climate March at COP17

I spent Saterday morning marching with thousands of environmental, women, youth and labour activists to demand urgent action on our demands for a legally binding agreement to curb greenhouse gases that are having a devastating impact on Africa and the poor in the developing world. It is clear that certain developed countries who are lobbied by ‘dirty industry’ are determined to scupper decisive action on climate change. They want Durban to be the graveyard of the Kyoto Agreement.
